Community helps clean up flood damage at LifeSong Church in Sheffield

Although church members will spend the next couple days deep cleaning, the church will be back up and running in time for their prayer night on Friday.

SHEFFIELD, Alabama — While people in Colbert County didn't see a tornado, they did get plenty of heavy rain and flooding during Wednesdays storms.

Pastor of Lifesong Church, Mark Grigsby, says as soon as he heard water was starting to rise near his church, he sent out an emergency message asking church members to come help move items from the basement.

"It started kind of water falling down the stairwell," said Grigsby. "We probably had a couple inches of water flowing in."

Grigsby sent the alert at about 10:00 pm Wednesday night, and in no time, the community showed up ready to help.

"About fifteen people from our church, a coach from Sheffield High School came over to help us. A guy that lives in the community, he didn't even go to church here just showed up to help," said Grigsby. "Everybody was like a bunch of worker bees. They just started picking up things and carrying it upstairs."

This kind of flooding isn't new for the people at Lifesong Church. About two years ago, severe flooding soaked their entire basement.

The church marked a spot on a wall in the basement about four feet from the ground showing where the water line was from the flooding in 2019.

The mark now serves as a reminder of what the church members have been through.

"We lost everything here in our church basement. It was horrible," said Grigsby. "Everything down here had to be gutted. It was a task. It took us about a year and a half to recover."

Although church members will spend the next couple days deep cleaning and replacing baseboards, Grigsby says they'll be back up and running in time for prayer night Friday and service on Sunday.

"It's going to take more than this to stop Lifesong Church from not being Lifesong Church," said Grigsby.
