Certain crimes have decreased during the pandemic in north Alabama

U.S. Attorney Jay Town says there's been a decrease in certain crimes, but an increase in domestic and overdose calls.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Since the pandemic, U.S. Attorney Jay Town says crimes have gone down in Northern Alabama.

Those offenses include murders and home invasions. However, Town says there's been a rise in domestic-related and mental health calls.

Overdose calls are also on the rise. Fraudulent activity has also gone up. Town says it's helpful when people cooperate with law enforcement during these times.

"It's very important that we continue to assist law enforcement with all of their calls for service. They are risking their lives by coming and showing up to a crime scene. They can't social distance from criminals. Nor, can they from witnesses," says U.S. Attorney Jay Town for the Northern District of Alabama.

Town says assaults and burglaries have also gone down.
