Carts4Hearts gets ready to speed through Downtown

One of Huntsville’s wackiest races is taking sign-ups so you can speed through town for a good cause.

The Downtown Rescue Mission’s “Carts4Hearts 5k” to help the homeless means dressing up yourself and a shopping cart and racing through downtown Huntsville. It’s described as, “…A loose parody of a famous Alaska dog sled race…take the format and mix it up. Replace the dogs with people (you and your friends) and the sleds with shopping carts, add in team themes, costumes, contests, fundraising and food drives… and [you] get the Carts4Hearts adventure race.”

Astronauts, nuns, hippies, and hunters, are just some of the teams from years past. It’s all to raise money to help Huntsville’s homeless.

Tonia Kamardella with the Downtown Rescue Mission says, “There’s nothing like it anywhere in the south. Six people and a shopping cart, all heavily decorated, running through downtown Huntsville, and the teams raise food, funds, and awareness for the mission. So it’s totally different and it’s a lot of fun.”

Carts4Hearts is just a few weeks away on March 9th. 20 teams can register with the goal of raising $20,000 and 10,000 pounds of food.
