11:47 AM UPDATE:

The suspect has been identified as 64-year-old Arnold Ray Battles.

A suspect was airlifted to a Birmingham hospital Tuesday morning after police were fired on while trying to serve a search warrant, Natalie Barton with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office says.

According to Barton, agents with the Etowah County Drug Task Force and Boaz police officers were trying to serve the warrant at 100 Pleasant Hill Cut Off when the suspect inside started shooting at officers. Barton says two Boaz officers returned fire while the other officers took cover.

The suspect was shot two times and airlifted to a Birmingham-area hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been released.

Oxford PD will be investigating, and JSU’s Center for Applied Forensics is on the scene gathering evidence, Barton said.
