Athens Main Street asking students to design 'selfie mural' in Merchant's Alley

The deadline to submit is April 30. The winning design will be selected by an art review committee and the building owner by May 7.

ATHENS, Ala. — Athens Main Street is requesting design submissions for a "selfie mural" in Merchant's Alley.

The non-profit organization said the mural should be "instagram-able." Limestone County students ages 14 to 18 can submit a design for mural, which will be done in Merchant's Alley off of 107 North Jefferson Street between Terranova's and the Athens Main Street office.

The space for the mural is approximately 12-feet wide and 8-feet-8-inches tall with a wood exterior. The mural's theme is "Athens Amplified" and should incorporate music into the design, according to Athens Main Street.

Athens Main Street gave the following requirements and considerations for the mural:

"There will be no logos or commercial imagery in the mural. All artwork should be family appropriate. All works submitted must be original works of art. No reproductions of copyrighted or other material will be accepted. Think about how people will interact with the selfie station, using the music theme, and taking scale into consideration."

The winning sketch will be projected and traced on the surface of the wall by Athens Arts League, who will also be responsible for coordinating area groups to help paint the mural.

To submit a design, email a JPEG, PNG or PDF image of the work to trishablack@charter.net. You should include your name, title of the work, school, email address and phone number in the body of the email. If you are unable to email the submission, you can submit a hard copy with contact information by mailing it to Athens Main Street at 107 North Jefferson Street in Athens, AL 35611.

The deadline to submit is April 30. The winning design will be selected by an art review committee and the building owner by May 7. The project is expected to be completed by late May.

The artist with the winning sketch will receive $500. Athens Main Street also requests that the winner record an audio description of the work for promotional uses.
