Anonymous donor gives $1 million to build new skatepark in Huntsville

Elements of the historic Get-A-Way Skatepark will be incorporated into the new facility.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — A brand new, cutting-edge skatepark is coming to John Hunt Park in Huntsville.

The new sports complex is being built on a three-acre site between Kids Space and the championship soccer fields.

City leaders say the new facility will include pavilions, sunshades, lighting, restrooms, and expanded parking.

An anonymous donor is giving $1 million to help make it happen. The project is expected to cost about $4 million.

Elements of the historic Get-A-Way Skatepark will be incorporated into the new facility.

Skateboarder Paul Gierow said, "This skatepark is going to be iconic because it's going to be based upon a skatepark built in the late 1970s and it was a massive park, and it's just going to be a nod to that plus include Olympic style elements."

The City of Huntsville is working with the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville and Tony Hawk's charity, The Skatepark Project, to ensure the project is completed efficiently and is up to date.
