MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The members of the newly formed Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission on Thursday met in a formal session for the first time for an organizational meeting in Alabama’s historic 1859 Capitol Building.
According to the meeting minutes, Governor Ivey told the commission how important it was to "get it right" and that "transparency and ethics must be included in every aspect of the Commission’s work."
Legislators legalized medical marijuana in 2021 and Governor Ivey signed the bill into law. Dr. Steven Stokes was elected as chairman of the commission with Rex Vaughn was voted in as co-chair. Stokes then appointed a subcommittee tasked with searching for an executive director of the commission.
In the meeting, Stokes emphasized that the Commission needs "physicians willing to complete the instruction, tests, fees, and hours necessary to receive that certification." Stokes assigned a subcommittee to work on this task.
