Huntsville man walks 1,000 miles in the wake of George Floyd's death

Change, justice and equality. That message, from a Huntsville man walking one thousand miles to Minnesota.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — After the death of George Floyd, Terry Willis felt compelled to do something.

"I thought of the most extreme thing that would get the most attention, silently."

He decided to walk from his home in Alabama to the spot where George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis.

Willis started walking on June 2 and on Sunday, more than a thousand miles later, he took the final steps of his trek.

Surrounded by a crowd of supporters, Willis completed his cross-country journey by kneeling at the Floyd memorial.

He summed up his mission in three words.

"Change, justice, equality. Just for all of us to be seen as equals. That's it."

Willis's 1,000 mile march has garnered nationwide attention.

He took detours to pay his respects to Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky, Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and others who have been killed by police.

As Willis made his way to Minnesota, supporters stopped him to take pictures and show appreciation with food, gas and words of encouragement.

"You're gonna be able to do it, you're gonna be powerful, it's amazing, we love you and appreciate you."

"Because we support him and everything he's doing, what he believes in. It's a great thing."

But Willis says the walk isn't about him.

It's about people of color being seen, respected and treated equally.

"I'm black and you're white, but we humans. So until we all start treating each other like humans, we'll never see the change that we need."

Willis is also raising money to start a nonprofit organization focused on teaching individuals with a criminal record a skill that will allow them to open their own businesses and employ others.
