HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — If you're thinking about buying a book to give someone for Christmas, think about gifting The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop.
The New York Times Best-Selling Author and Birmingham native, Fannie Flagg, is holding a virtual book-signing to raise money for the Huntsville non-profit, Free 2 Teach.
Free 2 Teach offers free resources to kids and teachers in the three Madison County public school systems. The organization helps 3,800 teachers and 54,000 students.
This isn't Flagg's first time supporting the non-profit. In 2013, she autographed books at the Free 2 Teach supply store where she met the late Eula Battle, who co-founded the organization.
"I was very saddened to hear of her passing, and so this is hopefully a way to honor her and help out with her charity and keep it going in her honor," said Flagg.
Flagg has a soft spot for teachers. She says they deserve recognition and support, especially now during the pandemic.
"I was lucky enough to have had several wonderful teachers in my life and encouraged me even though I am dyslexic to keep trying and keep fighting," said Flagg. "If I hadn't had these teachers, I don't know if I would have ever started to write."
By buying the signed book, you will help get more supplies to local teachers and students.
Books cost $33 for in-person pick-up and $35 for those that need shipping. In-person pick-up will be Saturday, December 12 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am or Wednesday, December 16 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Free 2 Teach Store at 3054 Leeman Ferry Road in Huntsville, Alabama.
