Academy Sports, Alabama A&M donate equipment to the Huntsville Lakewood Recreation League

As part of the program, Alabama A&M student athletes will mentor kids throughout the 2021 spring semester.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Academy Sports + Outdoors and Alabama A&M Athletics are teaming up to get baseball equipment to kids in Huntsville.

On Tuesday, the two groups donated an Academy Sports + Outdoors gift card, balls, gloves, and other baseball gear to the Huntsville Lakewood Recreation League as part of an outreach program.

As part of the program, Alabama A&M student athletes will visit and mentor kids throughout the 2021 spring semester.

Alabama A&M Athletic Director Bryan Hicks said, "We care, and we're supporting them and trying to help them fight through these challenging times, and our student athletes get just as much reward for being a part of it."

The Huntsville Lakewood Recreation League says this mentorship program will help about fifty kids in the community.

The partnership between Academy Sports + Outdoors and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) focuses on establishing meaningful community initiatives within the SWAC footprint. Specifically, these initiatives will look to activate and amplify grassroots efforts, such as youth outreach and mentoring programs, that are inclusive of students-athletes and administrators from across the conference.
