2020 Election: What to do if you test positive for COVID-19 on or near Election Day

On Friday, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced COVID-19 positive voters can apply for an emergency absentee ballot.

ALABAMA, USA — Thursday, October 29 was the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot in Alabama. That does not allow people who test positive for COVID-19 after that date to vote absentee.

On Friday, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced COVID-19 positive voters can apply for an "emergency absentee ballot."

In order to vote using an emergency ballot, voters must submit a copy of their valid photo I.D. and include a note and signature from a physician explaining why the voter needs the emergency absentee ballot.

Those ballots had to be requested and returned by the voter by the close of business the day before the election. If you requested an emergency ballot in time but could not make it into the circuit clerk's office, you can assign a designee to return it for you. The designee must also sign the emergency ballot.

If the emergency absentee ballot is returned by a designee, it must be turned in to the county absentee election manager by noon on Election Day.

What if you test positive on election day? What if you missed the opportunity to vote using an emergency ballot?

Although it's not recommended, your only option would be to vote at the polls.

County probate judges have been working to provide safe voting options and sanitary areas for voters of concern to cast their ballot on Election Day.

Election officials are encouraging all voters to sanitize, social distance, and wear face masks when voting in person.

Voters will not be denied their right to vote if they chose not to wear a mask.
