Local veterans are saying they need more access to advanced caregivers. And some veterans have to wait up to 30 days to get care.
Nurse practitioners say they can help provide extra care for veterans in need. They’re pushing for more medical freedom to provide extra care like, writing prescriptions, writing referrals and providing basic care.
Retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen., Vincent Boles, says, “If we take the ability of the 4,800 nurse practitioners in the VA at the top of their capabilities, we’ll be able to give more care to veterans faster. And the sooner we reduce that backlog, it’s in everybody’s interest.”
The Department Veteran Affairs is currently taking public comments this issue. You have until July 25th to weigh in on the rule nurse practitioners can play in the VA.
