One local student brought home an award from the 2019 Youth Beef Cattle Show during the Alabama National Fair.
Makayla Walker of Madison County took part in the Montgomery competition on Sunday. She won for showing the Angus Division Bred and Owned Reserve Champion Heifer.
The Alabama National Fair runs from Oct 4-14 and features showing of beef cattle, goats, sheep, dairy cattle, and swine, along with showmanship contests. About 250 exhibitors compete each year.
Students also test their knowledge of livestock, evaluation skills, and showmanship in Premier Exhibitor Contests. Mary Hannah Gullatt of Lee County, Intermediate Division High Individual, talked about the time that goes into show preparation.
“We work the calves every day washing, drying and practicing,” said Gullatt, 15, who lives in Salem and was inspired to show cattle because of her older sister, Grace. “We spend a lot of time in the barn and mainly learn about working hard.”
