Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely has asked the AL State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to investigate the death of an inmate, Randall McCafferty, age 57 of Ardmore.

According to the Sheriff’s office, McCafferty was found unresponsive in the Limestone County Jail booking area at 8:00 am on November 18. He was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:00 am.

McCafferty was arrested for driving under the influence on Sunday night, November 17th. He was treated at Athens-Limestone Hospital for approximately four hours before being released and later booked into the county jail.

McCafferty was housed in booking where he was under constant observation and video. Blakely stated nothing is suspicious around the death, but due to McCafferty’s incarceration, it is customary for an outside agency to handle the investigation.

The body has been sent to forensics for an autopsy.
