Lauderdale County Sheriff’s deputy shoots car burglary suspect

Lauderdale County Sheriff's deputy shoots a car burglary suspect in early morning encounter.

UPDATE – 11:35AM – Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton tells WZDX that Paul Hinkle was the driver of the truck that attempted to ram into a deputy in Wednesday mornings police shooting incident.

Hinkle was shot in the shoulder by a deputy who was attempting to question him, and two others allegedly involved in a rash of overnight burglaries in Florence.

The two others arrested were identified as Shamarie Crayton, and Deandre Perry.

All three are facing burglary charges. Sheriff Singleton says Assault charges may be filed as well.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton says it was just a matter of minutes after Florence Police issued an alert for suspects involved in early morning burglaries that deputies encountered the three subjects.

Sheriff Singleton says the call came out shortly before 3:00 Wednesday morning and deputies encountered the subjects in the Elgin area shortly afterwards. At that point, Singleton says two patrol cars boxed the subject’s vehicle in on Highway 72  at Elgin Crossroads, when the driver threw the vehicle in reverse in attempts to ram into the deputy.

The Sheriff says one deputy then fired a shot through the window of the vehicle, striking the driver in the shoulder. The suspects still attempted to flee when the deputy then fired shots and blew out the vehicle’s tire, according to Singleton. The subjects involved then threw two pistols out of the vehicle, both of which have been recovered.

The driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was treated and released from the hospital. All three suspects were taken to the Lauderdale County Jail where they will face numerous charges.

Singleton says while the burglaries are all tied to the Florence area, the three may also be facing Assault charges in their encounter with the Sheriff’s department.

Florence Police are heading up the investigation into the shooting incident.
