January known as “Divorce Month”: Numbers spike at the top of the year

According to a recent study by a law firm “Irwin Mitchell,” one in five couples plan to divorce after the holidays.

January marks the start of the new year, and for many, the chance to start over. But, it’s also known as the “Divorce Month” with some of the highest divorce rates of the year.

According to a recent study by a law firm “Irwin Mitchell,” one in five couples plan to divorce after the holidays.

“Market Watch” reports, almost 30 percent more people are looking for divorce lawyers during the month .

One of the main reasons why? Some couples are experiencing hardships and plan to split in January because they say they’re “just trying to make it through the holidays”.

A local therapist says, sometimes seeking help can make all the difference.

We met up with Counselor, Monretta Vega, from Huntsville Psychotherapy and Counseling Services.

She says, “Divorce is not an easy thing. A lot of times we might think that. It’s not just simply signing a piece of paper. There are emotions involved. It can lead to some forms of depression or anxiety. Some self esteem issues …”

Vega also advises seeking professional help before signing the divorce papers.

In addition to being an emotional struggle, divorce can cause couples financial stress. On average each couple pays around $15,000 in legal fees.
