Intuitive Planetarium opens at Space and Rocket Center

A brand new state of the art planetarium is now open at the US Space and Rocket Center.

Inside what was formerly the Imax Space Dome Theater is now the Intuitive Planetarium– the US Space and Rocket Center’s newest attraction, which was unveiled Thursday afternoon during a ribbon-cutting.

The planetarium offers viewers a journey through space– even onto the surface of planets– with the only 8k laser projection system in the country– which means incredible clarity and pictures.

“This is going to be an asset for this community like we haven’t seen in a while,” said Harold Brewer, Chairman of Intuitive Research and Technology Corporation. “It’s amazing how you can transport yourself through different places in the universe, and you can see it from different aspects.”

Not only do you get the view from earth up he explained, but you will get the view from outside down as well.

“It takes imagery that has been gathered from NASA probes and satellites– it can take that imagery and blend it into a three dimensional picture,” said Brewer.

The planetarium will also offer an opportunity for students in North Alabama to learn outside the classroom.

“The planetarium is a wonderful experience– very thrilling for a child or an adult!”, said Dr. Cathy McNeal is Chief of Strategy and Innovation at Huntsville City Schools.

“To come here and learn the STEM ability of science, technology, math, and engineering– when you bring a child here– and they are immersed in an environment where they see it, and feel it, they learn quicker.”

The Planetarium is also a venue the community can use for cultural and education events. It’s now open, with showtimes throughout the day.
