During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Dr. Casey Wardynski announced he will resign from his position as superintendent of Huntsville Schools. He says he informed board members of his decision on Tuesday.

The board will go into special session at 5:00PM on Thursday to formally accept Dr. Wardynski’s resignation and name an interim superintendent.
According to the School Board President, the board has 180 days from the time they accept his resignation to have someone appointed to the Superintendent’s position.
Dr. Wardynski has held the position since 2011. Under his leadership, the school district has constructed nine new schools in Huntsville. Dr. Wardynski also created and funded Alabama’s largest Pre-K program. He developed plans to move Huntsville City Schools from a $19 million deficit and state supervision to a $40 million surplus by 2016.
Prior to his stint with Huntsville schools, Wardynski was the chief financial officers for a school district in Colorado. He is a retired Army Colonel.
Dr. Wardynski says he is stepping down for personal reasons.
