Run, Forrest run! You may remember that line from the movie “Forrest Gump,” and two military veterans are walking in his footsteps across the country!

Every step is for a purpose. Dan Spangler and Joe Trainor, Jr. plan to walk 6,000 miles to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina by May 25th. It’s what they’re calling “Operation: Keep your Spanky.”

The pair is raising awareness for military families and veterans to keep their pets during financial hardships. This journey has already been rough for the duo, weather diverted some of their plans, and a vehicle donated by a fellow veteran, broke down. But, they say they won’t give up on the mission.

“At the time I didn’t realize it but when I came back, I had a lot of issues dealing with my medical issues coming back from a war. Spanky [my dog] was there for me no matter what. That unconditional love with him being there and being next to me and loving on me is what kept me alive,” said Spangler.

Their next stop is Memphis. The pair is only traveling with a few essentials like some clothes, dog food, and $50.
