When, and with who, to wear a mask

For many people the gradual reopening of the economy means time to meet up with family they have not seen in a while. Do you need to wear a mask around your family?

"If you haven't seen say your brothers and your sisters, your nieces, nephews, your parents in weeks or even months. Should they be thinking "oh, you're my daughter, or your my son, or your my brother, your my sister, so I trust you've done all the right things. And so when we're together we don't need to wear our masks. Should people be thinking like that?"

"It comes down in the end to how much of a risk a group of relatives or close friend are willing to take."

And the risk is high for people over age 65 and for people with underlying health conditions.

"I wouldn't expose my relatives to even the slightest risk in that circumstance."

Doctor Ronald Waldman is a professor of Global Health at George Washington University.

He says unless you live together, you should be wearing masks and social distancing when visiting other family and friends.

"I think we're still in a dangerous time and I think there's still transmission of the virus taking place."

Doctor Danielle Ompad is an epidemiologist and an associate professor at NYU School of Global Public Health.

"The only way I would say you're not wearing a mask when you're meeting up with your family you don't live with, is if everybody's been isolated on the same island in different abodes but there's nobody else on the island."

In other words, always wear a mask when you are with family and friends you don't live with.

"People are going to want to slack off a little at this point and time. They shouldn't, but they will. So I say make darn sure that you can do that while running the absolutely least risk possible."

And just because the economy is reopening does not mean that COVID-19 has disappeared.
