UAB doctors discuss promising coronavirus vaccine trials, one of which they are directly involved in

33,000 people will be taking part in the trial that starts next month for the Astrazeneca vaccine, including 500 people at UAB.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Today doctors at UAB discussed coronavirus vaccine trials.

Nationwide, two of the most promising vaccines are those being developed by Moderna and Astrazeneca.

The Astrazeneca vaccine is given in two doses one month apart.

Since studies have shown kids are not impacted as much by covid, they want the vaccine to create an immune response that will allow those who are at risk to react more like children.

"So we have to test the vaccine in elderly individuals to make sure that they actually have the immune response we think they have and to see if it actually protects them. We have to test this vaccine in people with high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease - to be sure it works in them as well. And we also need to test it in the younger individuals as well. And I will say we are only testing it in adults, 18 and over, and there is no upper limit, age limit."
