HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The American Red Cross needs your help. The spike in COVID-19 cases has led to a 'convalescent plasma' shortage.
Red Cross representatives say they need donors who have recovered from COVID-19 to help those who are currently sick from the virus.
The plasma contains certain antibodies to fight the infection.
Individuals who have fully recovered and received a verified COVID-19 diagnosis are urged to sign up to give convalescent plasma now by completing the donor eligibility form at RedCrossBlood.org/plasma4covid.
So far, more than 380 COVID-19 survivors from Alabama and Mississippi have given the plasma.
"It's important as we see these spikes in cases, that because of the increase need for convalescent plasma, that we have donors who have recovered and feel better to come and to help to share their good health now with patients who really need it," says Red Cross Communications Director, Annette Rowland.
Donation appointments can be made for the coming days and weeks by downloading the free Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.
For those who donate between Aug. 1-Sept. 3, will be given a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Amazon.
