Local church working with Huntsville Hospital to get community vaccinated

Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church President Delvia Hughes says holding this event is important because she has many medical challenges.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church partnered with Huntsville Hospital on Thursday morning to hold a two-hour vaccine clinic for anyone in the community.

Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church President Delvia Hughes says holding this event is important because she has many medical challenges.

"I would prefer not to be around people who are not vaccinated," Hughes said. "So, if you have not been vaccinated you need to come on out and get that vaccination."

The church's new senior pastor said he was inspired to host the clinic after seeing how well his home state, Connecticut, is doing getting people vaccinated.

"Coming from Connecticut, being one of the states that was leading it, you know and coming here, it really just pushed me to say hey we've got to get this out and give people the opportunity," said Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church Senior Pastor Dion Watkins.

He says one reason people may not be getting the vaccine is that they're too busy.

"One of the key issues of why some won't come to get vaccinated is because a lot of times when they're available in the inner cities, it's during work hours," Watkins said.
