Check your smoke detectors

Firefighters recommend when it's time to replace a smoke detector to purchase one with a 10-year battery.

MADISON, Alabama — While you're at home during the 'Safer-At-Home' order, now's a good time to check your smoke detectors.

If you hear them 'chirping' that means it's going dead and it's time to change the battery.

Firefighters say it's good to look for one with a 10-year sealed battery. Crews can also come out to your home to test the smoke detectors.

"Make sure if you have to replace them that you get a 10 year sealed battery so that this smoke alarm here, the battery will not go out for 10 years. So that way you never have to worry about changing it," says Madison Fire & Rescue Community Relations Captain Michael Sedlacek.

Make sure there's a smoke detector in every bedroom, and not too close to the kitchen.
