There is a shortage of type-O blood across the nation

June 14 is World Blood Day! The Red Cross wants to shine a light on this day but also remind people of this blood shortage and encourage all blood types to donate.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As COVID-related hospitalizations have decreased, the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries have gone up.

Because of this, we're seeing a shortage in blood supply across the country.

The American Red Cross is urging donors of all blood types to give, but there is a specific shortage of type-O blood and platelets due to their use in emergency rooms.

"There's a great need and demand for blood because of the pandemic, a lot of patients had to defer surgeries and hospital care, and so because of that there is a great demand for the blood and that's why there is a shortage, so we're really reaching out to the community to try and get our blood supply back up so that we can save those lives," said American Red Cross Alabama and Mississippi Regional Communications Manager Selena Hardy.
