Get ready for severe weather

National Weather Service Huntsville is pinpointing topics to touch on each day this week like thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flooding.

February 18-22 is Alabama Severe Weather Awareness Week. National Weather Service Huntsville is pinpointing topics to touch on each day this week like thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flooding.

Being aware of what’s happening near you is the first step in getting ready for severe weather. Download the WZDX Weather App and set it to alert so it will wake you if you’re asleep.

Be able to pick out your location on a map, so you can see exactly what’s in your area. This will be helpful this week, as there is potential for severe flooding.

Emergency Management Officer, Chris Reed, said, “Especially if you’re new to the area, maybe talk to your neighbors if you live near a stream. You may actually be at a minor flood risk even if you don’t live in a designated floodplain.”

In the event of severe weather, you’re going to want to have a disaster supplies kit. Fill it up with a three day supply of non-perishable food, a gallon of water per person, flashlights, and extra batteries.

Another step to take is to make a plan.

“People shouldn’t wait until any type of severe weather to prepare, whether that’s severe winter weather, high winds, tornadic, flooding. Take the time to review your plans now. Sit down and discuss them with your family,” said Reed.

At the end of this week, Alabama is holding a sales tax holiday. Check out the list of items you can get tax free here.

If you plan to shop for supplies this weekend, call the store you want to go to and make sure they will exempt the tax for severe weather preparedness items.
