Positivity and encouragement fill the fifth grade classroom of Mrs. Tomara Hammond at Providence Elementary School.

“I just think that when you are with someone all day that you should make a positive impact on their lives, however you can,” says Mrs. Tomara Hammond, the Valley’s Top Teacher.

Mrs. Hammond has been teaching for fifteen years and treats her kids as if they were her own.

“They are my babies,” smiles Mrs. Hammond. “Sometimes when I talk about them, my own children are like ‘Us or your students?’ Because that is just how it is.”

“Mrs. Hammond is one of the best teachers I have ever had,” says Jamiah Maxtion. “She is nice, but she does give you a lot of work.”

And she’s right. Mrs. Hammond says she wants her kids to know the importance of hard work, so they can succeed when they go into middle school and later in life. Her kids know she is hard on them, because she loves them.

“So I think she gives us a lot of work so we can do better, and better, and better,” says Jamiah. “And when we get one question wrong we can learn on the next paper.”

“When you do a mistake or something, after that, she will guide you into the right way,” says Christopher Rowe.

Not only do they learn a whole lot, they also laugh a lot!

“There are so many things that are great about Mrs. Hammond,” says Christopher, with a big smile on his face. “Number one thing you should know about Mrs. Hammond is that she is extremely funny.”

“They think I’m funny. Even when I’m not trying to be funny, they think I’m funny.” laughs Mrs. Hammond.

Mrs. Hammond makes relationships with each of her kids, and really gets to know them as people and learners.

“The more you listen to them, the more you’ll have an idea of what they need from you,” Mrs. Hammond shares.

She wants her kids to know that she will always be there for them, no matter what.

“If you’ve been in my classroom, then your my baby forever,” says Mrs. Hammond. “Because I think about you and want you to be successful, so that’s important to me.”
