The kindergarten classroom of Mrs. Avery Hammon at Nelson Elementary is filled with fun and love.
“I want my kids when they leave to know that they are loved, they are safe, and that we are a family,” shares Avery Hammon, the Valley’s Top Teacher. “And so, I just tell them that all the time, to be kind and to love one another.”
Mrs. Hammon’s kids know that they are cared for and loved unconditionally.
“Sometimes she has to go and a substitute has to teach me, but that’s okay, because Mrs. Hammon always won’t forget us, because Mrs. Hammon loves us,” smiles Turner Kate, a kindergartner.
“She’s here for us all the time,” says Lily Beth, a fellow kindergarten student.
It is pretty obvious that Mrs. Hammon has a gift when it comes to working with kids, and it is something she has been called to do since a young age. She helps kids grow both in and out of the classroom.
“From doing church and youth and working with the kids, or teaching gymnastics on the side and working with young children, I just love to be around kids,” explains Mrs. Hammon.
The kids get to do hands-on activities like counting bears and food items. Mrs. Hammon always keeps learning new and exciting.
“We learn, and we do lots of fun stuff, because we color,” says Lily Beth.
“Mrs. Hammon always teaches me things when I do not know how to do them much,” explains Turner Kate. “But I still learn how to do things.”
Mrs. Hammon’s kids learn so much during their kindergarten year, but all the math and reading is not what is most important to our Valley’s Top Teacher.
“I just want them to know that they are loved first and foremost, and that they are always going to be loved for and taken care of, and that we are going to have fun together,” shares Mrs. Hammon.
