Education Celebration: Huntsville parents and students help raise money for District 5 schools

The community gave donations, which helped provide District 5 schools with necessary supplies like copy paper and ink cartridges.

Students, parents and friends made their way to Grissom High School for some fun and games today. District 5’s ninth annual Education Celebration had everything from inflatables to ballet dance companies.

The community gave donations, which helped provide District 5 schools with necessary classroom and program supplies, like copy paper and ink cartridges.

School faculty members thought this was a great way to build relationships and teach kids the value of community service.

We met up with Master Sergeant Derrick Hamilton, Grissom High School’s JROTC Instructor. He said that fundraising events like these mean a lot to his students, who volunteer at the Education Festival every year.  “My Military Skills Team is a very prominent team here at Grissom High School, and we travel outside of Alabama to compete, to the states of Georgia and Tennessee, and that requires a lot of funding. If you look around, it’s a great day to come out and do something great for the community, meet new people, and have a good time all at the same time,” Hamilton said.

The money raised today will go toward the districts’ 13 schools.
