Drainage improvement project begins in Athens

Construction workers began the First Avenue Area Drainage Project in Athens.
ATHENS DRAINAGE PROJECT

This morning, construction workers began the First Avenue Area Drainage Project in Athens. They started by closing down North Houston Street by Athens Elementary School.

The project is scheduled to take four months. As the project continues, more neighborhood streets will be temporarily closed. The project will update the drainage system along First Avenue, Horton Street, and Hobbs Street in the First Avenue neighborhood.

Due to recent flooding, surface water got backed up and didn’t drain properly.

City of Athens Grant Coordinator and Communications Specialist, Holly Hollman, said, “Not even big rain events like what we had in February, but even a heavy rain day, you will see a lot of surface water in that area because it’s so low and flat.”

Throughout the time of the project, crews will close the streets beginning at 7 a.m. and will keep them closed 8 to 10 hours each day.  Roads will open back up to traffic in the evenings.

The project will benefit homes, businesses, and Athens Elementary School.
