Donut Shoppe closing after 38 years in the Shoals

A popular donut spot is closing its doors after serving the Shoals area for more than 38 years.

After serving the Shoals for 38 years, the Donut Shoppe is closing its doors at the end of April. The Donut Shoppe made the announcement on their facebook page on April 1st, but it was no April Fool’s joke. Their store in Muscle Shoals will serve customers for their last time on April 30th.

Thursday morning, Regina Michaels rang up the last order of the day at the Donut Shoppe. Cases that are normally full of treats were bare as they’re completely sold out for the day.

“Since we put it on Facebook that we’re having to close, people have just swamped us. We’ve been selling out at 7:30 in the morning,” said Michaels, the store’s bakery manager.

“This property was sold,” she said. “From what I understand, it will be all tore down, and they will build a new Dunkin’ Donuts here.”

Her parents bought the Donut Shoppe over 38 years ago.

“It’s a struggle. We’ve been here a long time. It’s like most of my life,” she explained.

She says her phone has been ringing off the hook in the store, and she has been busy taking orders for customers who want that last donut fix.

Customers picking up their donut orders are showing love and support for the shop..

“I have been getting donuts here since I was pretty young,” said Eve Styles. “I don’t even remember the first time.”

However, she does remember the first bite.

“I was like oh my gosh, these donut holes are to die for,” she exclaimed. “To see the set up and how you could get Bavarian cream or whatever inside the donuts, you could get a powdered donut, I was like, “yes!”

As for what’s next for the Donut Shoppe, Michaels says the owners are exploring their options. “Since the overwhelming Facebook page response, people have been upset about it. They’re just exploring different things that they can do. We don’t have a plan at this moment.”

The Donut Shoppe opens at 4AM, and they try to stay open until 2PM. When they sell out, they have to close, so if you want your donut fix this month, plan on getting there early, or you can call and place an order for pickup. Click here for contact information.
