A Decatur man was arrested Thursday after a federal court indicted him on seven charges related to child pornography.

A federal grand jury in Birmingham, Alabama returned an indictment on Feb. 27 charging Benjamin Eugene Walter, 38, with five counts of production of child pornography, one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of receipt of child pornography.

The indictment alleges that, between Nov. 2013 and July 2014, Walter used and attempted to use five minors to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of transmitting a live visual depiction of such conduct.

The indictment further alleges that Walter distributed child pornography in December 2015 and received child pornography between November 2013 and December 2015.

The charges in the indictment are merely allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

This investigation is a part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.
