LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY/WVLA) – Dozens of trophies will be handed out a next week when artists from across the musical spectrum gather for the 61st annual Grammy awards.

Lafayette native Lauren Daigle is nominated for two Grammy awards this year.

Her current album sits at number one on the Billboard Christian chart for the 18th week in a row.

The first release from that album, you say, has topped several Billboard Christian music charts since it was released in July… number one streaming for 23 weeks, number one in digital song sales, and it held the number one slot on the airplay chart for 27 weeks.

Interestingly, all that success hasn’t jaded the Lafayette girl. it’s inspired her.

“You say was written right after the dove awards my very first Dove awards,” Daigle says.” And I remember feeling like what is all of this… like the red carpet and the energy of it all… like I’m just a swamp girl from Louisiana but I remember going into the studio the next day and telling my producers I don’t know what I’m signing up for like I feel really unsure about kind of my surroundings and like the fear of the unknown was creeping in. and I remember my producer saying you should replace these lies that you’re believing with the truth”

The truth is that Daigle, whose voice has been compared to Adele’s, is racking up awards and shattering records.

Her song, “You Say”, has spent more time at number one on the Christian music charts than any other song in history.

It also made the 27-year-old Lafayette native the first ever female artist to have a song in the top ten of both the christian and popular music charts.

And now it’s Grammy-nominated.

“Grammy nominations in general that is such an honor. like i’ve grown up i would record on VCR tape the Grammys and go back and watch them over and over and over again and study people’s acceptance speeches or the performance or what people wore. I just remember being so enthralled by it. i mean the greats are in that space right,” Daigle says.

“You Say” is a contender for best contemporary christian music performance/song.

It’s featured on her album “Look up Child” which is also nominated for a Grammy in the best contemporary christian music album category.

Daigle has now been nominated for four Grammys since her career began in 2015.

I’m kinda blown away. it’s definitely a “Pinch Me” moment.

“Look up Child” has sold more than a half million copies since its release in September.

It was Billboard’s top Christian album of the year.

Achieving those stats and claiming eleven Christian music awards to date leaves little doubt she has become a force in that genre… and appreciates the moments her songs touch the listener.

“I can’t believe that I get the honor of hearing people connect with the music I’ve made and the message and it’s really beautiful,” Daigle says.

Daigle wants to reach all audiences with her music, and it would appear she is. her album debuted at number three on the billboard 200 chart in its first week… above mainstreamers like Ariana Grande, Drake, and Cardi B.

She is, not surprisingly, Billboard’s top Christian artist of 2018.

“Christian music I feel like in a way found me. it was the first thing that crossed the table as far as record contract and stuff like that but the message of Christian music is what I love so much.  I love people being able to find hope in a hard time and just the truth of Christ. I want everyone to know his goodness and his kindness and his love and his acceptance of people, his understanding of people. I think we live in a world where there’s so many harsh lines drawn and so many pointing fingers but Jesus was one, he dined with people that the world pushed out, right, and so it’s the message. that’s what I love,” she says.
