ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (WZDX) – Albertville city leaders officially broke ground Tuesday afternoon on a major retail development project.

“The Shoppes of Albertville” is an $18 million retail center located behind the Santa Fe restaurant on Highway 431. The development will feature new retail stores including Hobby Lobby, TJ Maxx, PetSmart, Ross and Hibbett Sports.

The shopping center will sit on 135,000 square feet and is expected to generate $33 million in sales annually.

Economic Development Director Melody Whitten says this will take Albertville to another level.

“This project is a real game changer. At the risk of using that cliche, we are expecting a huge significant impact, a big economic impact to the City of Albertville because of this project. We are not only going to generate over four hundred thousand dollars in revenue for the school system, but also more than $400,000 for the City of Albertville in sales tax revenue,” Whitten said.

City leaders say the shopping center will employ a total of 300 full and part-time employees. The stores are expected to be open by spring 2016. GBT Realty Corporation based in Brentwood, Tennessee is the project developer.
