On Thursday, Sept. 5, schools and organizations across the state of Alabama received nearly $90,000 in grant money for Youth Literacy Initiatives that work to help students and educators reach their literacy goals throughout the 2019-2020 academic year.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded more than $2.8 million across 44 states Thursday morning. The grants were awarded to youth literacy programs within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center. According the Foundation, “the grants awarded to Alabama organizations are expected to positively impact the lives of more than 13,000 students.”
The grants may be used to help students learn to read, prepare students for the high school equivalency exam, or help students learn English. Alabama recipients are listed below, and a full list of grant recipients can be found here:
