Over the last several years, Alabama prisons have actually seen a drop in their number of inmates.
In 2013, there were 26,300 inmates in the state prison system; in 2018, there were 20,600. There’s been a big change over the past 10 years, with more serious offenders making up a larger percentage of that population, with the top four being murderers, capital murderers, robbers and rapists.
