The Alabama Department of Corrections released a statement in response to a Federal Grand Jury indictment of former Lieutenant Willie Burks for failing to stop inmate abuse and making false statements in connection with the investigation.
In it, they say:
“We are deeply committed to proactively investigating criminal activity to ensure a safe and rehabilitative environment for those who are in our custody, and this investigation is a reflection of that commitment,” said Arnaldo Mercado, director of the Department’s Investigations and Intelligence Division. “The Alabama Department of Corrections will not stand for the type of behavior that has been alleged. We will continue to work with the FBI and additional law enforcement partners to investigate criminal conduct and prosecute when appropriate.”
The ADOC Investigations and Intelligence Division is continuing to investigate the case along with the FBI’s Mobile Division.
