Alabama bill would ban Transgender Health Care for minors: doctors could face 10 years prison

Kate Pimmel, parent and Chair of GLSEN Greater Huntsville, says, "I have friends who are directly affected by this bill... They are terrified for their children."

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. —

The Alabama Senate passed a bill that would make it a crime for doctors to prescribe opposite sex hormones or puberty-blockers from young people who identify as transgender.

The Senate passed the “Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act” almost unanimously.

The bill would make performing vasectomies, castrations, hysterectomies, or prescribing puberty blockers to anyone under the age of 19 a Class C felony, even with parental consent.

This could mean doctors who do provide these services could be punished with up to 10 years in prison.

We met up with a parent involved in GLSEN Greater Huntsville, a group of local LGBT+ advocates. She says this bill will flip young people's (and their parents’) worlds upside down.

Kate Pimmel, parent and Chair of GLSEN Greater Huntsville, tells us, "I have friends who are directly affected by this bill. They are terrified. They are terrified for their children. They are terrified they are going to lose their child because they cannot pursue the medical course of action that they and their doctors have decided is best for them."

The bill is now on its way to the house.
