ScottRansom is a Huntsville firefighter based at Station 17 in HamptonCove. He got into the business because a close personal hero led theway.

“I’m actually a second-generation firefighter,” says Ransom. “My dad was a firefighter for about 30 years, so I’m following in his footsteps, and I love it.”

He says Huntsville Fire & Rescue looks out for its firefighters, and it makes sure they’ll always be ready to go when an emergency hits.

“I think it’s some of the best training around. They make sure we have the best equipment and the best turnouts. We have a training facility and our training officers do they best they can and they do a really good job.”

Ransom has been on the job for 20 years, but you wouldn’t think it to look at him. Simply put, the job hasn’t aged him because he enjoys it so much.

“I actually live in Harvest, and it’s like a 35-minute drive for me,” explains Ransom. “But I love the crew so much, and I love the station, so I don’t mind the drive every third day because I love working here.

Additionally, he can always count on his fellow firefighters at the station to brighten up the day.

“It’s the family away from your family,” Ransom tells me. “If you’re having a bad day, you can come into work and this is like another family. They’ll cheer you up and make you forget about whatever.”

Sure it’s important that Firefighter Ransom enjoys what he does, but an even bigger reward is the result it has on the people he helps and the lives he saves.

“What helps is the support from the community. Everybody around here, especially Hampton Cove — they’re great. They really make our job a lot easier because it’s just nice to know when people appreciate you or send you a card or something like that. It’s really cool.”
