Giant Galapagos Tortoise to be released after decades in breeding program

Breeding to save the species, he is now being released after fathering hundreds.

GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS, Ecuador — This giant Galapagos Tortoise is just one of fifteen released in the Galapagos Islands this week after spending decades in captivity breeding to save the species.

Diego is 100 years old and can live up to 200 years!

This guy fathered more than 800 offspring during his time in captivity.

The program started in the 1960's and was deemed a success, resulting in the birth of more than 2000 tortoises.
