La Nina Winter: What does that mean?

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - La Nina has arrived and will likely stay with us into the winter season.

What exactly is a La Nina?

It's a natural phenomenon that occurs off the west coast of Central & South America, when sea surface temperatures are cooler than normal in the Pacific ocean.

In return, this DOES have an impact on the over all atmospheric set up in North America. For the winter season, this means generally warmer than normal temperatures for almost the entire country, especially in the south, northeast, and four corners region.

As for precipitation, wetter than normal conditions are more likely in the Northern Plains and Ohio Valley while drier than normal conditions are more likely in the south.

The Tennessee Valley falls right in between the "wetter than normal" and "drier than normal" categories, meaning we have "equal" chances of our winter season going either way.

Don't get me wrong, we'll still get cold at times this winter. And I'm sure we'll have at least a few CHANCES of snow (we do live in the south, y'all). But if you were overall hoping for a frigid cold & snowy winter... you might want to plan a vacation to Montana.
