Samir Doughty verbally commits to Auburn

VCU transfer Samir Doughty has verbally committed to Auburn. CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein first reported the news.

Doughty averaged 9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game as a redshirt freshman last year. The 6-foot-4 guard was a 3-star prospect coming out of Math Civics and Sciences in Philadelphia, Pa.

The sophomore decided to leave VCU two months after Mike Rhoades was named the program's new head coach. Rhoades replaced Will Wade, who filled the vacancy at LSU.

"After doing my due diligence and where the VCU program is going coach Rhoades and I together have agreed that it was in my best interest to further my academic studies and basketball goals elsewhere," Doughty said in a social media post in May.

Auburn had two open scholarships after signing junior college transfer Malik Dunbar, but talked about rolling those over into the 2018 season. The Tigers have a solid verbal commit from 2018 five-star forward E.J. Montgomery.

Doughty will have to sit out a season as a transfer.
