Woman jumps from third floor apartment to escape fire

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - An early morning fire injured one woman who escaped the blaze by jumping out of her third floor apartment window.

Huntsville Fire and Rescue got the call around 1:45 this morning to the Warren House Apartments. When they arrived the fire which started in a third floor apartment, had spread into the attic area of the building.  A woman was on the ground below, according to Captain Frank McKenzie of Huntsville Fire and Rescue.

Andrew Gutierirez, who lived below, was awakened by smoke. He and his wife left the apartment.

"The entire apartment, third floor, was ablaze."  Gutierriez recounts later. "A young lady was hanging out of the window, waiting on someone to come and get her and it just came to a point where she made a decision to jump."

"It was scary, because I was scared for her.  Terrible thinking about being in that position in a window. And there's fire and rocks below you," says Gutierriez.

The woman was transported to Huntsville Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

Captain McKenzie says it took firefighters around thirty minutes to extinguish the blaze. No cause has been determined as the investigation continues.
