SMD Symposium amid threats from North Korea

Agencies talk future of missile defense technology

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The annual Space and Missile Defense Symposium is underway in the Rocket City.

It falls at a time when the U.S. is facing tense circumstances as North Korea continues to take steps towards building nuclear missiles.

At today's symposium, upcoming missile defense designs are on display that could one day protect our nation and its allies.

"We all come together to share ideas with leadership and the government to talk about what's next. What's on the horizon," said Jim Rogers, VP, Lockheed Martin Government Affairs.

A gathering of the minds is happening at Huntsville's Von Braun Center.

Some of the leading agencies in our nation's Space and Missile Defense are here to find the next best technology.

"Everyone wants to be a part of a solution to help this country out in the future," said Rogers.

Over 3,000 people registered this year.

Lockheed Martin is the host and demonstrated several different technologies.

"You can't just build a system. You got to consider sustainability, affordability, ease of use," said Rogers.

Bob English, who is on the Space and Missile Defense Symposium's planning committee said,  "When you see on the news when a country like North Korea threatens to retaliate with thousands of missiles. You get concerned."

Huntsville is a center site for Missile Defense, creating innovative technology and programs to help ease those concerns.

"As a country we have the capability to defend ourselves against a missile attack from whoever and right now that seems to be really important," said
Bob English.

It is why hosting symposiums to discuss these future products are so significant.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Space and Missile Defense Symposium.

It runs through Thursday at the Von Braun Center.
