Roy Moore campaign sign defaced in Athens

Republican committee replaces spray painted campaign sign

ATHENS, Ala. - It's a side of politics that unfortunately comes out and in this case it's adding to controversy surrounding U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore.

Vandals expressed their views for Moore and took it out on a campaign sign.

A Roy Moore sign located in a pretty obvious spot right on Highway 72 in Athens was the victim of politics rearing it's ugly head.

"People have inherent feelings and they feel they have the right to abuse somebody else. I have a right to tear down everybody else's sign. I have a right to tell them they can't talk. That's not what America is
about," said John Spieler, an Athens Resident.

On private property someone defaced the campaign sign.

Just weeks ago someone sliced the sign. Last night letters were spray painted on the same sign to create a vulgar word.

"A couple of weeks ago we started having signs disappear. I had somebody call and say my sign is gone and we went out to look. They had cut it off the t-post," said Noah Wahl, Chairman of the Limestone County Republican Executive Committee.

The organization sent someone out to fix the problem and added more to the sign.

"We put some extras on it to try to make a point that we don't appreciate people taking the signs down," said Wahl.

Wahl says not only did the vandals commit a crime when they damaged the sign, but they also trespassed on private property.

He says they will likely contact police to report the vandalism.

"The worse thing is that it puts a damper on the whole political process," said Wahl.

John Spieler said, "If we don't respect people's opinion it leads to violence."

In Limestone County anyone caught vandalizing any political property could be arrested and face criminal mischief charges.
