Road extension expected to ease traffic around Grissom High

People who live in South Huntsville now have a better idea of what's happening with a new Haysland Road extension.

Huntsville City Council President Jennie Robinson hosted a District Three Town Hall meeting. It was held at the brand new Grissom High School where the Haysland Road extension will be connected to.

After community members toured Grissom High they got an update on a new road extension that will give them better access to the school.

The $5.5 million dollar project will be two miles long and an adjoining greenway between the residential neighborhood and Haysland Road has been proposed.

Jennie Robinson, Council President and District 3 representative, says, "The Haysland Road extension is a new city road. It's the road that's being built to lead to Grissom. It’s going to be extended to Redstone Road. They are still in the design phase right now and so as those designs are completed, they'll build it, and construction will begin probably in January."

Some people who live in the area tell me they're not happy about the noise coming from construction work.

Officials say that's a short-term problem, and because it will provide another access point for the school, it will actually help traffic in the long run.

City leaders tell us the new high school has brought lots of opportunity for growth in South Huntsville.

Robinson says, "There were 133 new students at Grissom this year that were not expecting. That created some challenges, but that's also good news. It tells us that South Huntsville is growing. It tells us that Grissom is in fact the game changer for South Huntsville that we hoped it would be."

The Haysland Road extension is part of the city's capital improvements plan.
