Police encourage community awareness after terror suspect arrest

HPD talks importance of vigilant neighbors

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Questions still surround what or who, a man was arrested for supporting an act of terrorism, was targeting.

22-year-old Aziz Sayyed of Huntsville is in Madison County Jail.

WZDX spoke with an employee from the Twickenham Apartments where police say Sayyed was living.

Kevin Beard is on the staff at Twickenham Apartments. He says he is advising tenants to definitely be on the lookout.

Beard told me folks who live here have been asking questions about the man who was their neighbor.

"We have been telling them not to be concerned about it because our police, our authorities have got it under control and handled," said Beard.

The FBI and local law enforcement are being tight-lipped with specific details of this case.

They are saying the threat no longer exist, thanks to a tip.

HPD talks the importance of neighbors being aware.

Lt. Stacy Bates said, "Without each other's help an arrest like yesterday might not have happened."

"They did contain it," said Beard. 

 It is not uncommon for some people to stay to themselves and not want to engage in what their neighbors are part of, but being conscious could be a life-saver.

Lt. Bates said, "Without your input and without your buy in and your involvement ,you're not going to have the quality of life that you're looking for if you want us to just handle it on our own."

As for the folks living over at Twickenham Village, the staff is asking people to stay vigilant and not fearful.

"Be cautious. Watch out for your surroundings. If you feel that something is out of place, just let somebody know," said Kevin Beard.

Investigators did say the case involved Redstone Arsenal.

Team Redstone released this statement in response to Thursday's arrest:

"We do not discuss the installation's security conditions. Please contact Huntsville Police or FBI for any questions concerning this investigation and arrest, said Chris Colster, U.S. Army Garrison, Redstone Arsenal spokesman.

"We always appreciate the close work and cooperation within our law enforcement community which keeps Team Redstone safe and secure each and every day."
