Morgan County filing lawsuit against drug distributors over opioid crisis

Morgan County suing three of the country's largest wholesale drug distributors

MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. - Morgan County Commissioners are suing some major players in the drug trade.

"We see it more and more our jails are filling up and it seems like more and more of our people that are being arrested are on prescription drugs," said Commission Chairman Ray Long.

Opioid addiction is a big problem in Morgan County. According to the CDC Morgan County's opioid prescription rate is 135 prescriptions per 100 people.  The national average is only 67.

Many abusers first get hooked by just filling their prescriptions. "It's been estimated that 75% of people that use heroin and illegal drugs similar to that, started off on prescription painkillers," explained Attorney Greg Reeves, who's helping file a lawsuit against major drug distributors.

The Morgan County Commission is filing a federal lawsuit against three of the country's largest wholesale drug distributors.

"The drugs companies that's producing this stuff and making it so easy to get, need to pay part of the burden, they need to step up to the plate, it's not right for the citizens of Morgan County to bear all the burden," Long said.

The lawsuit states the distributors failed to disclose the amount of opioids being prescribed and misled the public.

"Part of the concern that our groups had is that the public hasn't always been told how addictive these drugs are," said Reeves.

Reeves said Decatur City Council is also considering joining the lawsuit.
