Limestone County is making sure hunters know new hunting regulations

Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association hosts a hunting informational

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. - Some big changes are coming to a deer stand near you and Limestone County leaders are making sure you are ready.

This time of year people come out to the Limestone Hunting Preserve to brush up on their shooting skills, but before you begin hunting in September, there are some changes to the laws you should be aware of. Tuesday evening the Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association hosted a hunting informational. Game wardens say one major change this hunting season is you are now allowed a bonus buck.

"In addition to the three buck deer that you could kill during the season, certain management areas are allowing one extra buck to be killed that, does not count towards your buck limit. They call it a bonus buck," said Sergeant Travis Gray, with the wildlife and freshwater fisheries enforcement.

Also new this 2017-2018 season is the Pintail harvest has been reduced. Six ducks are allowed a day and may include only one Pintail. If you're hunting dear and turkey you must have a harvest record.

"In addition to your license you also have to have what is called a harvest record, to record your harvest before you move or take those animals out of the field," Gray said.

This season renewing hunting and fishing licenses have been made easier online. "If you're hunting on property that's not your property, everyone between the ages of 16 and 65 is required to have a hunting license,” explained Gray.

Despite the rumors no changes have been made to the state's baiting law. "It is still illegal to hunt over bait in the state of Alabama. If you're hunting deer it needs to be at least 100 yards away and out of your line of sight," said Gray.

Conservation Enforcement Officers said last hunting season many warnings were issued for violations of the game check regulation. This season failure to report harvest will result in a citation.

State hunting and game information is available at outdooralabama.com, the website for the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources.
