Letter of Intent filed for new Huntsville City Hall

Plans to look at developing a new Huntsville City Hall

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Plans to build a new city hall could soon be in the works.

During last night's city council meeting, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle filed a letter of intent.

The letter allows him to open discussions with a developer to come up with a model for a new city hall.

Mayor Battle says it's time to look towards the future.

City Hall has been in its location for at least 50 years.

A lot has changed over those years.

Mayor Tommy Battle said, "Now we're getting down to the place where we are really starting to have the conversation about City Hall, where it needs to be?"

There is also the question of if this historic building can be saved.

"It has probably seen its use for life so now what do we do is next," said Mayor Battle.

A new development is part of Huntsville's Downtown Master Plan.

In the initial proposal, the plan calls for the demolition of the vacant city hall annex and eventually the demolition of city hall.

There are plans to build a new one.

"It probably does need to be renovated because you look around and you can see things boarded up," said Gordon Swint.

At last night's city council meeting, members agreed to open discussion.

Their questions included cost, efficiency, and how much will be saved in the long-run.

Council members are also looking to bring all city operations to one location, making city hall a one-stop shop.

"I feel like you have to sit down and weigh both of those considerations. I tend to think that if you plan for the future more that you need to go with something more cost effective," said Gordon Swint.

"We've got to weigh out the plus and minuses of the cost and everything. This is just part of our planning process, because this is a 2,4,6, 8 year project to put it all together," said Mayor Battle.

The letter of intent filed yesterday is non-binding.
